The Mezuzah

The Mezuzah is special biblical Mitzva for every Jewish home.

A mezuzah mounted on the right side of the doorpost designates the home as Jewish, reminds us of G‑d and our heritage, and is also a symbol of G‑d's watchful care over the home and it’s inhabitants. According to Jewish tradition The placing of a mezuzah on the doors of a home or office protects the inhabitants — whether they are inside or outside.

The actual mezuzah is a parchment scroll, on which the Shema is precisely handwritten by an expert scribe. The Mezuzah is then placed in case to be hung on the doorpost.

It is proper to have your mezuzahs checked at least twice over a seven year span, and many have the custom to check them yearly prior to the High Holidays, or when experiencing difficulties, whether in health, business or other. Even if the mezuzah was purchased from a reputable source and previously found to be perfectly kosher, it is natural for new cracks, fading, and other problems to appear with time. Of course, checking must be done by an expert scribe.
